4A Economics – Bernard Durkan TD Visit

As part of their Economics module, 4A welcomed the Kildare North TD, Bernard Durkan to CPC. Bernard has been a TD since 1981. He is the third longest serving TD in Dáil Éireann. Bernard gave the students an insight into the work of a national politician. He explained the reasons why he got involved in politics and how he has tried to do his best for the country in his 30 years in public life. The students asked questions and Bernard gave very thorough answers. It was a great learning opportunity for the students – it was interesting to discuss the state of the economy and to hear the views of such an experience politician. A big thank you to Bernard for taking the time to visit our school. S. Dowling (TY Economics Teacher)

Fantastic Result for Transition Years.

Well done to the "Rosso Solini" team who captured the Senior Student Enterprise Award at the national finals in Croke Park yesterday. Over 15,000 students from 400 schools participated in this year's City and County Enterprise Awards. Tara Haughton got the idea for her Rosso Solini business when confetti got stuck to her shoe at a wedding. Tara's Rosso Solini (Italian for red soles), is flourishing and employing two staff. Her three-pair packs of stick-on soles sell for €15 online and in some retail outlets. Tara is pictured above (left) with her team mates Tomas Tierney, Peter Sheehan and Emer Fogarty. Picture from the Irish Times, Alan Betson. For more details on Tara's enterprise check out Rosso Solini on Facebook and Youtube.

5th Year Business - visit from Economist

Local town councillor (since 2009), Alan O' Kelly recently visited CPC to meet the 5th Year Business class. Alan is a representative for the Naas area. There was a discussion about local politics and the role of the local public representative. Alan is an economist with IBEC (Irish Business & Employers Federation) and discussed economic issues with the students. It was interesting to get the views of an economist about the state of the eonomy, how it evolved and how it might be dealt with in the future. Alan is a member of Fine Gael, the leading party in government and he tried to explain some of the policies being pursued by the new government. There was also a discussion about the work carried out by IBEC. Alan explained how this body represents employers. It was an interesting learning experience for the students and it will prove useful for them in the future. A big thank you to Alan for taking the time to call to our school. S. Dowling (5th Year Business Teacher).
