Measles Alert

The HSE has asked the school to inform students, staff and parents of the fact that Ireland is currently experiencing a measles outbreak. Although, fortunately, no deaths have been reported so far, a lot of cases have resulted in people being hospitalised and some children have required intensive care treatment.

Measles is one of the most infectious viruses known to man. Vaccination with MMR is the only way to protect against the disease.

Two doses of the vaccine are necessary – one at 12 months of age and the second at age 4-5. All children 6 years and older should already have received the two doses of the MMR vaccine.

If your son/daughter has not received the two doses of the vaccine (and has never suffered from measles) then they are at the risk of picking up measles during this outbreak and you are advised to contact your GP to arrange vaccination.

If anyone in your family does pick up measles it is important that you would let the school know.
