HOW THE EDUCATION CUTS WILL EFFECT CROSS AND PASSION COLLEGE
The Minister of Education and Science announced a number of serious education expenditure cuts which he is proposing to introduce in January. What concerns the partners in the Cross and Passion educational community is how these will affect our students. The following represents the exact impact these cuts will have on the education of students in Cross and Passion College:
Effect: Two teachers less in our teacher allocation next year.
Result: (a) Loss of two teachers
(b) Increased class sizes
(c) Most likely loss of subjects
(d) The viability of some educational programmes we offer.
Withdrawal of Substitute Cover:
Result: No cover allowed for teachers out on school business or uncertified sick leave
Effect: Major reductions in school activities for pupils, both inside and outside school, which require substitution cover for teachers e.g. field trips, retreats, study skills, games, educational competitions and any other extra –curricular activities.
Withdrawal of Grants:
Result: No grants in the following areas in the school year 2009/10
Effect: The loss of approximately €25,000 in funding for our educational programmes in the next school year and €4,000 less in this year from the Department.
Result: No money to support families in need next year.
Effect: 25-30 families will be affected
(b) Transition Year Grant:
Result: No grant next year and non payment of part of the grant this year.
Effect: Major reduction in educational activities in Transition Year 2009/10.
Increase in parents’ contribution to cover the cost of Transition Year.
Result: No grant next year and non payment of part of the grant this year.
Effect: Major reduction in educational activities in the LCA programme
(d) Miscellaneous Grants: (Choir, Learning Support etc):
Result: No grants in these areas next year.
